SUDANESE PROTEST OUTSIDE EGYPT’S EMBASSY

Khartoum, 29 Sha’ban 1434/8 July 2013 (MINA) –  About 200 Sudanese Islamists demonstrated peacefully outside Egypt’s embassy in Khartoum on Monday (8/7) to support Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi who is ousted by Egyptian military.

“We are with the legal president of Egypt,” read a banner carried by the group, which also waved Egyptian flags, Morroco World News reported as monitored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA).

Sudanese riot police looked on but did not intervene as the protesters presented a message to the embassy calling for Morsi’s reinstatement.

The Egyptian military toppled the elected leader last Wednesday (3/7) as millions took to the streets to demand an end to his turbulent year in power.

In April 2013, Morsi made his first visit as leader to Sudan, which Egypt jointly ruled with Britain until 1956.

Islamist Sudan called his trip “historic”, and the two sides vowed to double trade and investment.

Morsi, a former Muslim Brotherhood leader, was elected in June last year after a popular uprising toppled long-time Hosni Mubarak.
