Jerusalem, MINA – Two Palestinian brothers were forced by Israeli authorities to demolish their own home in the Al-Tur neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday, according to the Palestine Information Center.

The brothers, Nabil Abu Juma and Sami Abu Juma, said the house had stood since 2000. However, they had faced years of fines and legal pressure from Israeli authorities, who argued that the structure lacked the required building permit.

Demolition orders had been postponed several times in the past. Most recently, Israeli authorities reportedly set a deadline of June 26, 2026, requiring the family to remove the structure themselves or face substantially higher fines and additional penalties.

The case highlights a broader issue surrounding building permits and housing policies in East Jerusalem. Palestinian residents have long argued that obtaining construction permits is extremely difficult, leaving many families vulnerable to demolition orders.

Human rights organizations, both Palestinian and international, have repeatedly raised concerns over what they describe as discriminatory planning and zoning policies affecting Palestinian communities in East Jerusalem.

Critics argue that such Measures contribute to increasing pressure on Palestinian residents and affect their ability to remain in the city. At the same time, Israeli settlement construction has continued in several parts of East Jerusalem, a development that remains a source of international controversy.[]
