MORTAR SHELL EXPLOSION KILLS FOUR AFGHAN CHILDREN IN WARDAK PROVINCE

         Kabul, 27 Dzulhijjah 1434/1 November 2013 (MINA) – At least five kids were killed or injured following a mortar shell explosion in central Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan.

         According to local government officials, the incident took place in Syedabad district killing four children and injuring one other.

         Provincial governor spokesman, Ataullah Khogyani confirming the report said the victims of the incident belong to a single family, Khaama Press quoted by Mi’raj News Agency as reporting, Saturday (1/11).

        Mr. Khogyani further added that the children had taken a mortar round to their home which exploded leaving four children dead.

       He said the injured kid has been taken to IRC hospital for treatment purposes.

       Unexploded ordnance left behind mostly from civil war is threatening lives of a rising number of civilians, mostly children.

       UN Mine Action Coordination Centre officials earlier this year also urged the NATO-led coalition security forces to take immediate actions in order to clean clean up military bases and firing ranges from unexploded ordnance before leaving the country next year.

         Mohammad Sediq Rashid, director of the Mine Action Coordination Centre said a total of 53 Afghan civilians, mostly children, have been killed or injured by un-exploded ordnance found in or around ISAF bases and firing ranges since 2008. (T/P012/E1)
