LEBANON HOLDS NATIONAL MOURNING FOLLOWING THE DEATHS IN THURSDAY'S BOMB ATTACKS.

Beirut, 9 Shawwal 1434/16 August 2013 (MINA) – Lebanon Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced national mourning for the victims of the bombing on Thursday (15/8) in Ruweis region of southern Beirut.

Prime Minister also called on The Supreme Defence Council to have a meeting on recent bomb attacks in the country, Anadolu Agency quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA) as reporting, Friday.

Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) quoted President Michel Sulayman who condemned the ‘coward attack’ (referring to Thursday’s bomb attacks) as saying, “The attacks were aimed at violating the stability and resistance of Lebanon. The explosion has signs of terror organisations’ and Israel’s attacking styles.”

Thursday’s terror attacks in Lebanese capital Beirut killed 21 people and left around two hundreds people wounded, security sources said.

The bomb explosions took place in Ruweis region of southern Beirut where the majority of people are Shias. Around 200 people were taken to hospitals, said Lebanese Red Cross director of operations George Kittana.

Communication network was damaged in the attack while security measures were strengthened in the region.

A group, on the other hand, named “Mother Aise” claimed responsibility for the attacks via a video broadcast on the Internet. The spokesman of the group said the attack was the second one organised by them reminding the first attack on July 9 in southern Beirut again.

Many politicians in the country released messages of condemnation on Thursday’s bomb attacks. Tammam Salam, assigned to form the new government, described the attacks as “coward and barbarous”.

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nebih Berri also condemned the attacks and said in a written statement, “Terrorism and crime cannot be unconnected to Israel.” (T/P09/E1).
