Muslim Scholar Syafii Ma’arif Advises House Speaker Not to Legitize Same-Sex Marriage

Jakarta, MINA – House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has received advice from Muslim scholar Ahmad Syafii Maarif to restore the dignity of the DPR and prevent the legalization of LGBT or the same-sex marriage.

Bambang Soesatyo who was accompanied by Father Benny Soesetyo visited Syafii Maarif at Syafii’s residence in Jakarta on Sunday (21/1). At that warm and intimate meeting, Syafii was accompanied by a young cadre of Muhammadiyah, Defi Indiyanto Budiarto, according to Republika.

Bambang Soesatyo said that his arrival to see Syafii was to seek advice. Bambang who recently occupied the position of chairman of the House of Representatives felt he needed to get advice from senior figures so as not to be wrong in taking the decision to return dignity DPR for the better.

 “The meeting with Buya Syafii took place in a warm atmosphere and a lot of humor, although the Muslim scholar gave a lot of advice,” he said.

According to Bambang, the former chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Executive Board advised him to restore the dignity of the House as an honorable and dignified institution.

Syafii, who is now a member of the Presidium of the Presidential Working Unit of the Presidential Council for Pancasila Ideology Development (UKP-PIP), also asked Bambang Soesatyo to return the ethics code of the House of Representatives in order to make the legislation clear from group and transactional interests. “Buya suggested that the structuring of legislation should be in accordance with the values ​​of Pancasila,” he said.

On the occasion, added Bambang, Syafii also asserted that the House should not make laws that legalize same-sex marriage or LGBT couples.

“The Muslim scholar explicitly asks me that the House does not pass laws that legalize LGBT because it is against the spirit of Pancasila,” he said.

Bambang promised he would carry out the mandate of Syafii and even ready to risk his position if the House pass laws that legalize same-sex marriage couples. (TL/P2/RS5)
