House Approves Tito Karnavian’s Appointment as Police Chief

Jakarta, 19 Ramaan 1437/24 June 2016 (MINA) – House Commission III overseing legal affairs has approved the appointment of Commissioner General Tito Karnavian as the new National Police Chief by President Jokowi here on Thursday.

All political party factions expressed their agreement for the appointment of Tito Karnavian as the next police chief, Commission Chairman Bambang Soesatyo was quoted by Antara as saying.

He said House Commission III had also approved the respectful dismissal of current Chief General Badrodin Haiti, who is to retire at the end of next month.

Bambang said the result of the House Commission IIIs meeting would be brought before the plenary session of the House of Representatives for a decision.

Golkar Party faction member Adies Kadir said his party had given approval for Titos appointment and hoped that extraordinary crimes, such as corruption, narcotics and terrorism would continue to be given serious attention.

He also asked Tito to pay attention to the relations and coordination between law enforcement institutions and the House of Representatives so that the targets he sets can be achieved.

“The quality of bureaucracy in the police institution must also be improved,” he said.

House Commission III member from the National Mandate Party Yandri Susanto asked the police under Tito to seriously enforce the law in terrorism and narcotic cases.

He also asked for a cultural reform within the police force so that the institution becomes stronger, cleaner and more harmonious.

“There will be general elections in 2019 that will need serious security measures,” he said.

Tito, the youngest three-star general in the Police force, was the sole National Police chief candidate submitted by Jokowi. (T/R07/R01)
