ATTACK ON COURT IN ISLAMABAD KILLS 11 PEOPLE, WOUNDS 24 OTHERS

Islamabad, 2 Jumadil Awal 1435/3 March 2014 (MINA) – At least 11 people have been killed and 24 others wounded in an attack at a court complex in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

The attack was carried out on Monday, when unknown gunmen stormed the court in the city’s F-8 sector to rescue a defendant, Press TV quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

“There was firing by two to three people followed by two… blasts, which killed 11 people and wounded 24 others,” Islamabad police chief Sikandar Hayat told reporters.

“All the attackers fled, though one sustained injuries in the leg and back,” he added.

Police official Nabi Awan said the gunmen also threw hand grenades during the attack, which caused damage to the complex, with windows being blown out and walls breaking.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, yet.

Pakistan has been experiencing violence since 2001, when Islamabad joined the so-called US war on terror. According to Pakistani authorities, nearly 50,000 people have lost their lives in the conflict. (T/E01/IR)
