Jakarta, MINA Indonesia’s Aceh province is preparing to build an integrated Islamic school complex aimed at becoming a national model for modern, high-quality religious education.
The project, centered on a network of madrasahs, Islamic schools that combine religious and general subjects, is designed to produce graduates who are ethically grounded, innovative and prepared for global challenges.
Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar expressed support for the initiative during a meeting Tuesday in Jakarta with Aceh Deputy Governor Fadhlullah. He said strengthening integrated madrasah education is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to improve Indonesia’s human capital.
“Madrasahs must not only teach religious knowledge but also become centers for innovation, skills and civilizational development,” Nasaruddin said. “This integration will ensure Islamic education remains relevant and competitive.”

Aceh, located on the northern tip of Sumatra, holds special autonomous status and is the only Indonesian province that formally implements Islamic law. Its strong religious identity and historical role in the spread of Islam in Southeast Asia make it a strategic location for developing a model of integrated Islamic education, officials said.
The Religious Affairs Ministry will conduct a technical review of the proposal to align it with national education policies. Nasaruddin added that coordination across government agencies would be necessary to secure regulatory, institutional and infrastructure support.
Aceh’s administration hopes the integrated school complex will revitalize education in the province, often referred to as the “Veranda of Mecca” for its deep Islamic heritage, and eventually serve as a reference center for Islamic education in Southeast Asia.
Officials say the project aims to go beyond constructing school buildings by creating a comprehensive education ecosystem that blends religious values with science, technology and professional skills.

If implemented, the integrated madrasah complex is expected to symbolize Indonesia’s efforts to modernize Islamic education while fostering graduates who are academically strong, socially responsible and economically independent.[]
