Indonesia to Host OIC Extraordinary Summit on Palestine
Jakarta, 15 Rabiul Akhir 1437/25 January 2016 (MINA) – Indonesia will host the emergency Islamic Summit of the
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries on March 6 and 7 on the issue of Al-Quds and Palestine in light of the persistent apartheid Israeli policies of oppression of the Palestinian people, changing the demography and social make up of Al-Quds and encroachments on Al Aqsa Mosque.
The extraordinay meeting is being convened at the request of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Over the past few days, the OIC Secretary-General Iyad Ameen Madani, had conducted intensive talks with Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Paaestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki on the arrangements and preparations for the Extraordinary Summit, and established high level committees to continue work for that purpose, OIC said on Saturday on a press release.
Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasir Arrmanatha in Jakarta said through a press release that the summit was planned to be held in March 2016 in Jakarta with 57 heads of state invited the OIC to be discussed OIC’s next steps in support of the Palestinian struggle for independence and finding solutions to the issue of Al-Quds Al-Sharif.
In the OIC summit, Retno will also express the hope that the OIC increase its contribution to the cooperation
between Islamic countries, especially in spreading Islam Rahmatan lil Alamin – Islam is mercy to all the worlds.
“The OIC is also expected to contribute in creating peace and stability in the Middle East which is an area with a
majority Muslim population,” said Armanatha, also known as Tata.
Tata added the meeting between Retno and Madani also discussed the establishment of the OIC Regional Office in Jakarta.
The existence of the OIC regional office in Jakarta is expected to increase its cooperation programs in the Asia-Pacific region and to promote that Islam, democracy and modernity can go hand in hand. (T/R07/R01 )
