KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz Elected as PBNU Chairman for 2026-2031 Term

Jombang, MINA – KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, widely known as Gus Kikin, has been officially appointed as the Chairman of the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) for the 2026–2031 service term.

The appointment was made through a consensus deliberation by the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) during the 35th NU Congress at the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Tambakberas, Jombang on Monday morning.

The decision was announced by AHWA member KH Anwar Iskandar before the congress participants. Nine AHWA members had previously held closed deliberations to select one name from five candidates for PBNU Chairman, all of whom had received approval from the newly elected Rais Aam, KH Miftachul Akhyar.

The five names considered in the AHWA process were the result of a selection from congress participants. Several other names that had previously received support in tabulation were not advanced due to provisions regarding political positions, including Minister of ATR/BPN Nusron Wahid and Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, who remain in office.

Gus Kikin’s election also marks the implementation of a new mechanism in selecting the PBNU Chairman. Previously, the 35th NU Congress Plenary Session III agreed that the Chairman would be chosen through AHWA. The decision was made through a closed vote with 401 votes supporting AHWA, 150 votes maintaining the one man one vote mechanism, and one abstention.

Gus Kikin is the caretaker of the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School in Jombang. Prior to his appointment, he had emphasized the importance of maintaining unity among NU members throughout the congress process, stating that whoever is elected must prioritize togetherness within the organization.

With Gus Kikin’s election, PBNU’s leadership for the 2026–2031 term now consists of KH Miftachul Akhyar as Rais Aam and KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz as Chairman, both appointed through the AHWA mechanism, marking a significant change in NU’s leadership selection process at the 35th Congress.[]
