Brussels, MINA – Matjaž Nemec, a Member of the European Parliament, has publicly presented a nomination for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, putting forward UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese and a group of Gaza-based doctors for the prestigious award. The nomination, already submitted to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, has garnered support from nearly 300 eligible nominators worldwide.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Nemec announced the nomination, which he framed as “an expression of respect for the courage, efforts, and perseverance of individuals who defend fundamental human values in the most difficult circumstances.”
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, was highlighted for her work in upholding international law and human rights. Nemec stated that she continues her mission despite facing “strong political pressure” and sanctions from Israel and the United States, and that she “holds up a mirror to us all.”
The nomination also includes Gaza-based doctors, specifically naming Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and Dr. Sara Al-Saqqa. Nemec praised these medical professionals for risking their lives to save others amid the destruction of healthcare infrastructure and acute shortages, saying they “realize the values of humanity, solidarity and peace every day.”

It comes amid ongoing conflict in Gaza, where the Health Ministry reports hundreds of ceasefire violations and a death toll exceeding 70,600 people since October 2023.[]
