West Bank, MINA – Ramiz Alakbarov, the acting UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, has warned that Israel’s ongoing settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank is cutting Palestinians off from their farmland while increasing risks of displacement, land annexation, and deeper Israeli control, the Palestinian Information Center reports.
According to Alakbarov on Monday, the latest developments across Areas A and B of the West Bank are raising alarms over the fragmentation of Palestinian land and shrinking freedom of movement, while Israeli settlement expansion has shown no sign of slowing.
Alakbarov said Israel continues to demolish and seize Palestinian structures on the grounds that they lack permits, which are nearly impossible for Palestinians to obtain. He urged Israel to stop demolishing civilian property and abide by its obligations under international law.
Highlighting that Israeli settlements violate international law and lack legal standing, the UN official called for an immediate freeze on settlement expansion that continues to swallow more Palestinian land.[]
