New Jersey, MINA – Kylian Mbappé scored two brilliant goals to become France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 goals, as Les Bleus kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a resounding 3-1 victory over Senegal.
As reported by FIFA, the French captain’s two goals ensured there would be no repeat of his country’s defeat to the West African side in 2002.
However, it was Pape Thiaw’s side that posed the early threat in the match in New Jersey, New York on Tuesday. Nicolas Jackson’s shot went past Mike Maignan, bouncing unluckily off the post and goalkeeper. Then, when the ball went in, Jackson was ruled offside.
Ismaila Sarr also missed a good chance.

However, Desire Doue’s warning shot after halftime signaled a French counter-attack. Michael Olise and Mbappé forced Edouard Mendy into brilliant saves.
But then, Olise’s clever pass gave Mbappé the chance to slot past Mendy and equal Olivier Giroud’s record of 57 goals for France.
Mbappé then wrote his name into history with a superb shot from outside the penalty area, after substitutes Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye had scored impressive goals in the final minutes.
Mbappé’s next target is Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 goals in World Cup finals. The Frenchman has now scored 14 goals in the global event. []
