Weapons Law to be Tightened in New Zealand

Wellington, MINA – New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday his cabinet approved a decision to tighten arms ownership after a massacre at two mosques in Christchurch.

“We have made a decision along with the cabinet, we are unified,” Ardern said, Al-Jazeera reported.

He said, the details are still to be worked out but the changes to the country’s firearms law will be announced in full within 10 days.

Ardern added, the attackers used five weapons, two of which were semi-automatic, which were purchased with ordinary and modified weapons licenses.

The Christchurch weapons store, Gun City, admitted on Monday they had sold weapons online, to a 28-year-old white man accused of killing 50 people in a mosque shooting.

At a press conference, the owner of “Gun City” David Tipple said, his shop sold four weapons and ammunition to suspect Brenton Harrison Tarrant, through a “police-verified online mail-order process”.

It was not clear if any of the firearms Tarrant purchased from Gun City were used in Friday’s shootings.(T/Ast/P2)
