Gaza, MINA – UN officials have issued stark warnings about the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, describing conditions as “devastating” and warning of an imminent crisis due to the destruction of water infrastructure.

Jonathan Veitch, UNICEF’s special representative in Palestine, stated on Tuesday that cold and heavy rains are severely impacting families living in extremely difficult conditions. “Even with the ceasefire, daily life remains incredibly challenging for children in the Gaza Strip,” Veitch said. He noted that while some UK aid-supported tents have entered Gaza to provide winter shelter, “much more is needed.”

Separately, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to water and sanitation, Pedro Arrojo, warned of an impending “humanitarian catastrophe.” He accused the Israeli army of using “thirst as a weapon,” citing the destruction of nearly 90 percent of Gaza’s water facilities since the war began and the blocking of fuel needed to operate remaining wells and desalination plants.

Arrojo highlighted that contaminated drinking water poses a direct threat, raising fears of cholera and other deadly disease outbreaks among thousands of families.[]
