TURKISH PARLIAMENT RENEWS MANDATE ALLOWING THE USE OF FORCE ABROAD

Ankara, 29 Zdulqo’idah 1434/6 October 2013 (MINA) – The Turkish Parliament has approved the renewal of a mandate that allows the Turkish government and Armed Forces to carry out military operations outside Turkey’s borders when necessary.

This decision came after the Turkish government submitted a request to parliament to ratify a renewal of the mandate, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) reported as quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Friday (6/10).

According to Anadolu news agency, the mandate is one of the measures being taken by Turkey to respond to potential threats from the Syrian side.

The government had asked Parliament to approve the extension of the mandate for another year as of 4 October. The mandate notes that 71 Turkish citizens were killed as a result of attacks from the Syrian side.

It also mentions UN Security Council Resolution 2118, dated 27 September 2013, which states that the use of chemical weapons in Syria constitutes a threat to international peace and security. (T/P012/E1).
