Turkish government launches aid campaign for Syrian refugees

Ankara, 16 Shafar 1434/29 December 2012 (Turkishpress/MINA) – Turkish government launched an aid campaign for Syrians in refugee camps in Turkey. Turkish Prime Minister called for support for the campaign to extend a helping hand to the Syrian refugees in a show of strong solidarity.

“We believe that the Turkish people, our national and local news media, civil society organizations, officials institutions and trade chambers and unions will make any contribution to the campaign,” Erdogan said in a circular.

Turkish Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) said earlier on Wednesday that there were 147,107 Syrians currently staying in Turkey after fleeing clashes in their country.

AFAD said that it had set up five tent cities in Hatay, two in Sanliurfa, three in Gaziantep and one each in Osmaniye, Kahramanmaras and Adiyaman and one container camp in Kilis.

AFAD said that Syrian citizens taking shelter in Turkey were provided with lodging, food, health services, security, social activities, education, religious services, translation services and communications.

It was said that a total of 206,954 Syrians fled to Turkey so far but 59,847 of them returned to Syria. Syrians are provided meal three times a day, AFAD also said. (T/R-011/R-006)
