THAI MUSLIM GROUP URGES THAI GOVT. TO GIVE ROHINGYA SHELTER

Bangkok, 7 Rabiul Awwal 1434/19 January 2013 (MINA) – Muslim groups in Thailand have called on the government to temporarily suspend the deportation of about 800 Rohingya migrants who illegally entered the kingdom in the South, Thai News Agency reported on Friday

The Central Islamic Committee of Thailand said on Thursday that Thailand should give shelter to the Rohingya migrants while seeking a third country to take the refugees, rather than returned them to Myanmar, according to Thai News Agency received by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Saturday.

It also proposes the central mosque of southern Songkhla province as the temporary shelter to the Rohingya migrants until suitable settlements were arranged for them.

Also on Thursday, Tawee Sodsong, secretary general of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, and Songkhla Governor Krisda Bunrat visited Rohingya children and women at the temporary shelter in Songkhla on Thursday. Thai health officials visited the camp to give them health checks.

Pol Col Tawee said they were not the first groups of Rohinya migrants who illegally entered Thailand, adding that the Foreign Ministry and National Security Council would have to find long- term solutions and assistance to the Muslim ethnic people fleeing from Myanmar. (T/R-012/R-006)
