SYRIA DEATH TOLL OVER 140,000 – REPORT

Istambul, 16 Rabi’ul Akhir 1435/16 Febuary 2014 (MINA) – Half of 140,000 killed in Syria since 2011 were civillians, according to Syrian Network for Human Rights.

The number of deaths in Syria’s three-year civil war has reached 140,041, according to a report published on Saturday by the London-based Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR).

The report said approximately 71,000 of those killed were civilians, including 7,626 children and 5,064 women, Anadoul Agency quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

It added that opposition forces lost 9,000 fighters during the conflict, while the number of Syrian regime soldiers killed was 2,257.

The report says the figures on the battlefield are based on body counts and investigations on the ground. They are thought to be much higher but the warring sides conceal the real numbers.

Syria has been gripped by almost constant fighting since President Bashar al-Assad’s regime responded to anti-government protests in March 2011 with a violent crackdown, setting off a conflict that spiraled into a civil war. (T/P012/E01)
