Ramallah, MINA – Approximately 70 Palestinian women prisoners are observing the holy month of Ramadan under severe hardship inside Israel’s Damon prison, where they are systematically denied basic rights and subjected to inhumane treatment, the Palestinian Asra Media Office (AMO) reported on Wednesday.
In a detailed statement, the rights group revealed that the detained women, 24 of whom are mothers are being held under harsh conditions characterized by sweeping restrictions, including a continued ban on family visits and tightened lawyer access enforced through ongoing emergency regulations inside Israeli prisons.
The majority of the detainees face charges related to “incitement,” a category that encompasses journalists, university students, and minors, according to the statement.
The AMO drew particular attention to the heartbreaking case of 10-year-old Elia Mleitat, who is spending Ramadan separated from both of her parents, each held in administrative detention. Rather than sharing iftar meals with her family, the young girl must wait for news through lawyers’ visits, underscoring the human toll of detention policies on the most vulnerable.

Testimonies gathered from recently released prisoners paint a grim picture of daily life inside Damon prison. Authorities reportedly prevent the entry of Ramadan timetables, deliberately keeping detainees uninformed about the official start of the holy month, a practice critics describe as psychological warfare.
Meals are served cold and in meager portions, featuring poor-quality food and unclean water. The statement detailed that women detainees receive only three spoonfuls of rice, an overboiled egg, and six pieces of bread per day, with access to fruit denied and spoiled vegetables routinely provided.
Women who dare to complain face swift punitive measures, including food deprivation, the group reported.
The AMO further documented a severe lack of adequate medical care, particularly affecting women with chronic illnesses. Prison authorities reportedly provide a single medication to treat multiple unrelated conditions, a practice the rights group described as deliberate medical neglect that places detainees’ lives at risk.
