Mental Health Concerns in Indian-Administered Kashmir

Kashmir breaks Guinness record as world ‘s largest militarized zone.

Srinagar, 4 Sya’ban 1438/1 May 2017 (MINA) – Indian-administered Kashmir is one of the most militarised places in the world.

Decades of conflict between separatists and the armed forces have taken its toll on the mental health of many people.

About 700,000 people out of a total population of seven million are thought to suffer mental health problems, according to a recent study.

Kashmiri resistance groups in Jammu and Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule for independence, or for unification with neighboring Pakistan.

More than 70,000 people have reportedly been killed in the conflict since 1989. India maintains more than half a million troops in the disputed region.
