Bekasi, MINA – The death toll from a collision between a long-distance train and a commuter train (KRL) at Bekasi Timur Station has risen to five, with three people still trapped, authorities said early Tuesday.

“Update on casualties, at this time five have died. Approximately three are still trapped. Seventy-nine are under observation at nine hospitals,” said KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin at the Bekasi Timur Station in Bekasi City, West Java, early Tuesday, as cited by CNN Indonesia.

Rasyidin stated that KAI has established an emergency response post at Bekasi Station. He confirmed that one track at Bekasi Timur Station is now operational after the taxi that was struck was evacuated.

“As of 1:24 AM, the downstream track is already operating, after we followed up by evacuating the taxi and the KRL carriages that were hit,” he said.

Additionally, a total of 38 KRL Commuter Line passengers have been evacuated and are receiving treatment at hospitals.

Earlier, KAI Daop 1 Jakarta Public Relations Manager Franoto Wibowo explained that the KRL had stopped after being hit by a taxi at a level crossing near Bulak Kapal.
