AL-ERYAN TO AL-SISI: IT’S OVER, COUP FAILED, PEOPLE WON

Cairo, 20 Ramadhan 1434/28 Juli 2013 (MINA) – Essam al-Erian , vice president of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, in addressing Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has said that the military coup has failed, and that the people have triumphed.

“It’s over,” he said. “The dream of the presidency and leadership over the country has evaporated,” he added, Egypt Independent reported as monitored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA).

“The 25 January revolution was against tyranny, subservience to America, plundering the riches of Egypt, and begging from the Gulf,” he stressed.

He also said that there had been a year-long chance for the men of the “deep” state to comprehend the revolution, but that they have insisted on disrupting the path to democratization, then conspired to turn the clock backwards.

“In just one month, they have succeeded in convincing the majority of Egyptians and most of the world that the state will revert to the era of intelligence and security, corruption and murder,” he said. “And they have manifested it in the massacres that Egypt had never before seen.”

“They have returned to take revenge on the people who revolted after they were stripped of any initiatives to reform the July regime that was charted by the military,” he said.

“The question is, how long will it take Egypt to get rid of the legacy of domination, oppression, and a corrupt media and judicial system,” he said.

On November 30, Egypt’s Constituent Assembly approved the final draft of the country’s first constitution after the ouster of dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi is expected to review the final draft of the new constitution and put it to referendum within two weeks.

Supporters of the president also staged similar rallies in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and the central Egyptian province of Assiut.

The pro-Morsi demonstration in the Egyptian capital comes one day after thousands of Morsi opponents converged on Liberation Square to protest against the president’s decree and the speedy adoption of the draft constitution.

On November 22, Morsi signed a controversial decree allowing him to “issue any decision or law that is final and not subject to appeal.” The declaration also prohibits courts from reviewing the president’s decisions.

The move drew calls for nationwide protests from opposition forces who branded the declaration as “a coup against legitimacy” and “a major blow on the revolution that could have dire consequences.”
