AFGHAN-US SECURITY DEAL WILL BE SIGNED IN GOOD TIME: OSMANI

Kabul, 1 Safar 1435 / 5 December 2013 (MINA) – The acting Afghan foreign affairs minister Zarar Ahmad Osmani has assured that the bilateral security agreement between Kabul and Washington will be signed “in good time.”

While speaking during the NATO foreign ministerial meeting, Mr. Osmani said, “I can assure you that the BSA will be signed in good time between our two governments.”

Mr. Osmani also added, “Afghan government is seeking assurances from the United States regarding efforts to propel our peace and reconciliation efforts forward and to put an end to military operations against Afghan homes in accordance with the text and spirit of the BSA.”

In the meantime, the foreign affairs ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai told reporters that president Hamid Karzai can determine whether the pact be signed at the presidential level or at a different level between the two governments, Khamaa Press reported as quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Thursday (5/12).

He also added that the government of Afghanistan wanted to two assurances to sign the bilateral security agreemente with Washington, which includes a “meaningful” peace process that includes the Taliban must begin in Afghanistan, and an immediate halt to US and NATO forces operations on Afghan homes.

The comments by Janan Mosazai was followed by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s remarks who said Wednesday that president Hamid Karzai is not the only Afghan government official to sign the security pact with Washington.

The US Secretary of State John Kerry earlier also said that the bilatearl security agreement could be signed by Afghan defense minister Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi. (T/P012/E1)
