Gaza, MINA – The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has officially elected Khalil al-Hayya as its new leader, succeeding Yahya Sinwar. The decision was announced through the group’s internal Shura Council mechanism amidst ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and mounting pressure on its leadership ranks .

Hamas stated that the election of al-Hayya is part of the group’s leadership renewal process. He has long been a senior figure in the Hamas political bureau and has played a crucial role in various negotiations, including the ceasefire talks and prisoner exchange mediated by Qatar and Egypt . The appointment is expected to maintain the organizational continuity of the movement amidst the ongoing conflict .

Khalil al-Hayya is one of Hamas’s most influential leaders, originally hailing from the Gaza Strip. He has been a political bureau member for years and is known for his active diplomatic engagement with various regional mediators. In recent years, he became the face of Hamas in negotiations concerning an end to the war and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza .

The leadership transition comes after Yahya Sinwar was martyred in an Israeli military operation. Sinwar had been a central figure in Hamas’s Gaza leadership for years, and his death was considered a significant loss for the organization, prompting it to swiftly establish a new command structure . Analysts suggest that al-Hayya’s election could strengthen Hamas’s political approach in communicating with international mediators, though the group maintains its commitment to ending the occupation.[]
