Washington, MINA – The United States Senate voted Tuesday to advance a measure that would limit Donald Trump’s authority to launch new military action against Iran without congressional approval.

The proposal moved forward with a 50-47 vote after four Republican senators joined Democrats in support of bringing the measure to the Senate floor, according to CNN.

The bill would require the US president to seek authorization from Congress before initiating further military operations against Iran. Similar proposals had previously failed in the Republican-controlled Senate.

Republican senators Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Bill Cassidy voted alongside Democrats, with Cassidy backing the measure days after losing his party primary election.

Despite the procedural victory, US media reports say the bill still faces major obstacles because Republicans maintain overall control of the Senate.

Trump recently said the conflict with Iran could end “very quickly” if negotiations succeed, but warned military action remains possible if no agreement is reached.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have intensified in recent weeks following military threats, new US sanctions and disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats plan to continue raising the issue regularly in Congress amid growing debate over presidential war powers. []
