Malaysia to Send Aid to Indonesian Quake Victims

 

Kuala Lumpur, MINA — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Monday Malaysia would send aid to the Indonesian people who were affected by the earthquake Sunday in Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat, in the republic.

“We want to provide some aid to the Indonesian people who have become victims (of the quake),” Bernama reported, citing Mahathir to reporters at the Parliament Lobby.

Dr Mahathir also said that Malaysian Embassy officials in Indonesia were striving to ensure the safety of Malaysians who were in the quake-hit area.

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck Lombok at 5.47 am yesterday.

A Malaysian hiker, Siti Nur Ismawida Ismail, 30, was killed in the earthquake after she was hit by part of a collapsing wall of a building.

Six other Malaysians were reportedly injured in the incident which has claimed 14 lives. (T/RS5/RS1)
