IPU Conference to Discuss Rohingya Ordeal

Saint Ptersburg, MINA – Members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) agreed Sunday to list the ordeal of the Rohingya Muslim minority as an urgent item on the IPU conference agenda, KUNA repoted.

Conference chairperson said Kuwait, Morocco, Bangladesh, the UAE, Iran, Turkey, Sudan and Indonesia tabled a request to include the Rohingya item on the agenda, which was approved by 1,027 MPs and opposed by 35 others.

Dr. Amal Al-Qubaisi, UAE parliament speaker, described the suffering of the Rohingya as a disaster and a blatant violation of the international law and human rights.

She called for immediate provision of humanitarian aid for the Rohingya to alleviate their suffering.

Representative of Bangladesh said the Rohingya problem was posing a threat to international peace and stability.

He called for creating suitable circumstances to allow the Rohingya refugees return to their homes.

Meanwhile, the conferees discussed issues related to Venezuela, Syria and North Korea. (T/RS5/RS1)
