Madrid, MINA – Spanish giants Real Madrid, who hosted Bayern Munich at their home ground, the Santiago Bernabeu, were defeated 1-2 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.
In a high-tempo match, Vincent Kompany’s team scored just before halftime when Serge Gnabry (7) provided a precise pass to Luis Diaz (14), who beat the offside trap and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin (13) in the 41st minute.
Bayern doubled their lead seconds after the restart, when Michael Olise (17) provided a pass for Harry Kane (9) to finish neatly from the edge of the box after a quick counter-attack.
Real Madrid came out on top after the hour mark, and Kylian Mbappe (10) reduced the deficit in the 74th minute, meeting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (12) low cross at the far post.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (1) then thwarted Mbappé and Vinicius Jr. (7) with a series of brilliant saves, as the hosts searched for an equalizer that never came, while Bayern held a narrow but significant lead.
“We came out for the second half and immediately conceded. The two goals we conceded were a gift. Both teams had plenty of chances, but Bayern’s best player today was Neuer. In the end, that’s how it went,” Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger (22) told Movistar Plus. []
