Eugene Michael Jones, an American analyst and the editor of Culture Wars

Press TV has conducted an interview with Eugene Michael Jones, the editor of Culture Wars Online Magazine, about how West is hindering upcoming presidential elections by arming the Takfiri forces in Syria.

What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Mr. Jones, why is that the West is opposing holding elections in Syria while it supports an armed conflict there?

Jones: Well, Yes, there is a contradiction here. I personally think that in order to have significant elections that are valid the war has to stop first.

But in the recent past few weeks, after the loss of Crimea to Russia, apparently the American forces behind the Salafists and the Takfiri have armed them with more sophisticated weapons.

So, you are right, it doesn’t make sense to hold an election during the war when millions of people are refugees in Turkey and various other countries.

Press TV: I mean the West has a history of rejecting the results of the elections that it deems undemocratic. How much will the Syrian elections, due to be held in June, how much would they become a game changer, do you think?

Jones: I don’t see how they can be taken seriously under the conditions under which they are being held. But you are right. Democracy means ratifying the ruling class elite status quo. So, this is not just true of the West Bank when they choose Hamas in elections that are democratic are certified. It’s not true in Ukraine for example, where Yanukovych was elected by the democratic government and it’s not true in the Unites States either where the referendum, for example in California, where the people of California say they are against gay marriage, then some judge will overturn the results of the referendum even though the majority were in favor of it. So, yes, there is a lot hypocrisy going on here.

Press TV: Very briefly, what do you think will happen, how so you think the situation will evolve if President Assad takes part and wins the election?

Jones: The West would say it’s not a valid election. It’s very simple. So, I don’t see how he can overcome that in the current situation. They have to end the war which means that America has to stop arming the Takfiri especially with sophisticated weapons before the situation calm down. They need to feed the people in the refugee camps and need to make sure that, those people food is going to those people. And then when that all is taken care of, then I think they should have an election, but not now. (T/E01/IR)
