TEN INJURED IN TWO BOMB ATTACKS IN PATTANI

Bangkok, 15 Rabiul Akhir 1434/ 25 February 2013 (MINA) – Ten people, including an assistant  district chief and a three-year-old boy, were injured in two separate bomb attacks in Pattani and Narathiwat yesterday, Malaysian’s Bernama quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA) as reporting, Sunday (24/2).

Muang police chief Tuandir Juthanan said six defence volunteers and the assistant district chief were injured in an 8.50pm attack in Kampung Talubuk, Muang, Patani. He said, about an hour earlier, another bomb exploded in Pattani town but no injury was reported.

“Tyres were also burnt in the middle of roads at 20 locations in Muang, Nongchik and Yaring, all in Pattani, last night,” he said Sunday.

He believed the motive of the attacks was revenge by insurgents against the death of 16 insurgents in Narathiwat on Feb 13, during their attempt to ambush a naval camp there.

In Narathiwat, two defence volunteers and the boy were injured when a bomb exploded in front of a convenient store at Tanjung Emas, Raget at 4.20pm. Another bomb exploded about 20 minutes later there, as the police were investigating the scene, said a Narathiwat police spokesman.

More than 5,000 people have died since suspected separatists resumed their armed campaign to seek independence for the three southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, nine years ago.(T/P01/E1).
