Latakia, MINA – Syrian authorities have imposed an overnight curfew in the coastal city of Latakia following deadly security incidents, the Latakia Governorate announced Tuesday. The curfew, ordered by the Internal Security Command, began at 5 p.m. local time and is set to last until 6 a.m. Wednesday, Anadolu Agency reported.

According to the directive, the restriction exempts emergency cases, medical staff, ambulances, and firefighting teams. Residents were urged to fully comply, with warnings that violators would face legal consequences.

Interior Ministry spokesman Nour al-Din al-Baba stated that the ministry “will not tolerate any unlawful or reckless actions, regardless of justification,” reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens under state authority. He called on residents to avoid actions undermining public security or national unity, including incitement or acts of vandalism targeting people or property.

The curfew comes after gunmen attacked security forces protecting demonstrations in several coastal and central cities on Sunday. The protests, called by an Alawite religious authority, included demands for federalism. Authorities reported that the attacks in Latakia left four people dead and 108 others wounded among security personnel and civilians.

The new Syrian government, led by President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, has stated it is working to restore security and pursue remnants of the former regime, which is accused of stirring unrest in the coastal region, long a stronghold of senior officials under former leader Bashar al-Assad. Assad fled to Russia in late 2024, ending decades of Baath Party rule.[]
