PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO CALLS ON SYRIA TO END CONFLICT

Bogor, West Java, 26 Shafar 1434/9 January 2013 (MINA) – Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on Syria to immediately settle the conflict to end the bloodshed and avoid further fall of civilian victims.

The call was made by President Yudhoyono during a meeting with a number of Islamic scholars and experts on the interpretation of Al-Qur’an led by Sheikh Muhammad Ali Ash-Shobuni in Bogor, Monday, said Teuku Faizasyah, Presidential special staff for international relations.

Faizasyah said President Yudhoyono proposed three measures that can be taken to end the conflict in Syria. “First, stop the conflict, second give humanitarian assistances and third, political transition toward a government which protects the people,” he said.

When explaining Indonesia’s position in the settlement of the Syrian conflict, according to Faizasyah, President Yudhoyono revealed that he had talked with some figures of Muslim countries, such as Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan, on how the United Nations and the international community, should seek the solution for the problem in Syria.

The conflict in Syria has been going on for 21 months ever since broke out the first time. It began as a civil war between the government and the opposition camp that wanted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down but now has become a civil war involving many civilian communities.

According to the data issued by the United Nations, the conflict in Syria has left 60,000 people dead whereas chaotic situations have widened across the country, Internet access has been shutdown and international airports are crippled and security has diminished. (L. R-022/R-06/R-002).
