New Jersey, MINA – The Spanish national team won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, United States on Sunday.
Spanish star player and Muslim, Lamine Yamal, wrote “Praise be to God, we did it,” on X on Sunday, moments after his team won the 2026 World Cup.
In his post, the Barcelona star also included a photo of himself kneeling on the field with his hands outstretched, a common Muslim gesture of prayer.
Lamine Yamal has a diverse family background: his father, Mounir Nasraoui, is from Morocco and is Muslim, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, is from Equatorial Guinea.

Lamine Yamal has publicly displayed his Islamic identity on several occasions, including celebrating victories by saying “Alhamdulillah” on social media, observing the Ramadan fast while still actively playing, posting “Eid Mubarak” greetings during Eid al-Fitr, performing the Sujud (prostration of gratitude) after scoring a goal, and even waving the Palestinian flag in the crowd.
However, Yamal does not discuss his personal life or faith much in interviews, so most information about his religion comes from his family background and his public posts. []
