PALESTINIAN TEACHERS DEMAND SALARY ARREARS

      Nablus, 8 Rabiul Akhir1434 H/18 February 2013 (MINA) – All school teachers in West Bank plans to hold a strike demo on Sunday (17/2) and Thursday (21/2), the head of the teachers’ union in the West Bank said.
      Secretary of the teachers union Izz Dawabsha in Nablus told Palestinian Ma’an news agency that the decision was taken unanimously at the meeting of teachers’ union in the West Bank held on Saturday (16/2).
      Dawabsha said that the move was to protest the failure of the Palestinian government that did not pay teachers salaries in January 2013 ago. But the demo on Thursday will be canceled if the government pays their salaries soon.
      Bassam Zakarneh, a government official on Thursday (14/2) said that the Palestinian government has to set the date to pay teachers wages after a ministers meeting in Ramallah.
      Zakarneh added that the government is struggling to pay the teachers salaries, minimum to be able to pay for basic needs and transportation to work, according to Ma’an reports minotored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Monday.
      Zakarneh urged teachers not to make an actions that harm the Palestinian people because the government is trying to fight for their rights.
      Since November 2012, Israel has detained Palestinian tax revenue that had been used to pay the salaries of government employees. It makes ongonging financial crisis of the Palestinian government.
      Right now, there are 153,000 Palestinian civil servants who are still receiving very low wages, and repeatedly delayed payment. Palestinians continued facing financial trouble, even though they have the right to the tax revenues which now held by Israel.
      The international community should help to improve the living conditions of the Palestinian population, as well as promoting peace. (T/P04/E1)
