MUBARAK’S RETRIAL SET FOR APRIL
Cairo, 22 Rabiul Akhir 1434/4 March 2013 (MINA) – Egypt’s ex-president Hosni Mubarak and his interior minister are set to appear before a court in a fresh trial on April 13 for charges regarding the killing of protestors during a popular uprising in 2011 which ended his 30-year reign, according to Anandolu Agency reports monitored by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA) Monday (4/3).
Mubarak and his interior minister, Habib Adly, were sentenced last June to life in prison but in January this year an Egyptian appeals court overruled the sentence. Adly’s six aides will also face the retrial who were acquitted in the initial trial.
Earlier, in January 2013 the first trial involving Mubarak and his two sons and Adly is also considered not to produce something significant.
“The trial was disappointing since the beginning of the investigation and until its verdict. Though optimism that justice was close … what we see is a shallow interrogation spotted negligence,” said a lawyer, Nasrallah Hoda, according to Sigma News report.
The biggest surprise, he continued, was the verdict of acquittal of the responsibility for all security services and do not lead who is guilty of murder.
Beside the murder, the defendant is also suspected of corruption. During the trial last January, Mubarak supporters meet court. Dozens of people took pictures of the 84-year-old men and shouted, “We love you, President!”
After the judges gave the decision apeal, Mubarak supporters shouting, “Long live justice”.
Egypt’s Prosecutor General’s Office announced the former president was accused of engaging in other cases which he allegedly received a valuable gift from a government newspaper, quoted VOA.
Mubarak was recently transferred from the Tura prison in Cairo to a military hospital near the prison, after he fell in the bathroom and caused several broken ribs. The former president has multiple health problems since last June convicted. (T/P03/E1)
