Cairo, 2 Jumadil Awal 1435/3 March 2014 (MINA) -Egypt’s prosecutor general has released Abdullah Mohamed Morsi, the son of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, a day after he and his friend were arrested for alleged possession of hashish.

Morsi and his friend, Mohamed Emad El-Shamy,  later tested negative for cannabis consumption, according to reports from the prosecutor general, Egypt’s Ahram reported as quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).

Both Morsi and El-Shamy were arrested on Saturday afternoon at a security checkpoint in the Nile Delta’s Obour City, Qalyubia governorate, where officials say they found two joints of hashish in their car.

Morsi’s brother, Osama, condemned Saturday’s arrest on his Facebook page, claiming the allegations of drug possession were being used to “taint the image of honest people.”

According to police officials, El-Shamy is an employee at Raya Holding for Technology and Communications, a company owned by leading Muslim Brotherhood figure Hassan Malek.

Ousted president Mohamed Morsi is currently facing several trials for an array of allegations, including espionage, incitement of murder and killing protesters.

A son of Egypt’s ousted president Mohamed Morsi was arrested Saturday for possession of hashish in a western suburb of Cairo, media reported.

In a car with tinted windows, Abdullah, Morsi’s youngest son, was arrested along with another person smoking hashish cigarettes, Xinhua reported citing official news agency MENA as quoting an interior ministry source.

Abdullah confessed his possession of the drug and the two persons were referred to the prosecution for further investigations.

Meanwhile, Morsi’s elder son Ousama posted on his Twitter account that his brother was kidnapped by the police and the charges were fabricated.

“The incident of kidnapping and then arresting Abdullah Morsi is to defame the honest people,” Ousama said, noting the charges were very funny and absurd.(T/P03/P04)
