KARZAI CONFIDENT OVER KABUL-WASHINGTON SECURITY AGREEMENT

Washington, 30 Safar 1434/12 January 2013 (MINA) Afghan president Hamid Karzai following his visit with the US defense officials said that he was confident for reaching to an agreement regarding the security pact between Kabul and Washington during his three day visit.

Karzai met with the US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in Washington on Thursday and said Afghanistan will become capable of taking full security lead in the near future, according to the Afghan Khaama Press report received by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA), Saturday.

He is expected to hold talks with the US president Barack Obama in Washington.

Defense Secetary Leon Panetta also said Kabul and Washington have reached to the final chapter to implement stability and sovereignty in Afghanistan.

He said the relations between United States and Afghanistan will remain unafffected.

This comes as Washington on Tuesday announced that White House is assessing zero option troops for Afghanistan. President Barack Obama is also planning to withdraw a major portion of the 66,000 US troops deployed in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

In the meantime a number of the US officials earlier announced that Washington is considering to leave 3,000 to 9,000 troops in Afghanistan after US combat mission ends.

Afghan president Hamid Karzai has reportedly prevented to sign a security agreement with Washington due to sovereignty concerns.

President Karzai oppose legal immunity for the US troops and is not satisfied with the presence of US jails in Afghan soil. (T/R-011/R-006)
