Tokyo, MINA – A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast early Friday, according to the US Geological Survey, prompting a tsunami advisory that was later lifted by authorities, Anadolu Agency reported.
The quake occurred at approximately 0244 GMT at a depth of 16 kilometers (9.94 miles), with its epicenter located off the coast of Hachinohe city in Aomori prefecture.
Following the tremor, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory for northern and northeastern coastal regions, predicting waves of up to 1 meter (3.2 feet). Authorities in several cities also issued evacuation orders, urging residents to move to higher ground and designated safe areas.
Hours later, the JMA canceled the advisory after determining that the threat of dangerous waves had passed along Japan’s Pacific coast.
