West Bank, MINA – The Israeli occupation army has recently uprooted hundreds of trees, mostly olive, in various areas of the West Bank, particularly in Ramallah and northern Jerusalem, inflicting severe economic losses on local residents, according to the Palestinian Information Center.

The Israeli army also issued two military orders to uproot trees from about 380 dunums of land belonging to Palestinian citizens from the towns of Silwad, Ein Sinya, and Atara northeast of Ramallah, in addition to 100 dunums in the town of Ni’lin west of the city.

According to local sources, Israeli bulldozers uprooted around 200 olive trees between the towns of Beit Iksa and Biddu northwest of Jerusalem, without handing landowners any prior notices.

Residents said the uprooting of their trees resulted in major losses, as some of the trees were decades old and represented both a vital source of income and a deep cultural heritage.

Abdul-Karim Ajjaj, a farmer from Beit Iksa, said that Israeli bulldozers uprooted dozens of olive trees from his grove near the separation wall and the military road between Beit Iksa and Biddu.

The farmer added that most of these trees had been planted 25 to 30 years ago before the wall was built, noting that his grove used to produce about 30 large containers of olive oil annually.

He pointed out that the army had not notified him of its intent to remove his trees.

Eight months ago, the Israeli army closed a tunnel linking Palestinian villages northwest of Jerusalem, and declared its intent to remove nearby trees under the pretext of security concerns.

In northeastern Ramallah, Silwad mayor Ra’ed Hamed said that local councils received on March 3 a military notice declaring intents to uproot trees in the areas of Ein al-Haramiya, Wadi al-Balat, and Wadi al-Zeitoun for alleged security reasons.

Hamed explained that the military order targets both sides of the main road between Ramallah and Nablus used by settlers, meaning thousands of trees in Silwad, Ein Sinya, and Atara are slated for uprooting.

He noted that residents had already been prevented from harvesting the trees last season due to repeated settler attacks and crop thefts, as well as Israeli restrictions on their access to their lands and groves.

In the town of Ni’lin, west of Ramallah, the Israeli army intends to uproot olive trees from about 100 dunums of land near the separation wall.

Palestinian officials say the recent uprooting of hundreds of olive and fruit trees in Ramallah and northern Jerusalem is part of an Israeli plan to expand settlements and its security zones.[]
