Gaza, 5 Shawwal 1438/29 June 2017 (MINA) – Ministry of Interior and National Security in the Gaza Strip started on Wednesday building a new buffer zone with Egypt to control southern border of the Gaza Strip, stretching 100 meters inside Palestinian territory.

A 100-meter-long buffer zone on the border will be built inside the Gaza Strip to become a closed military zone, KUNA reported, citing the statement of Undersecretary of Ministry of Interior and National Security Major General Tawfiq Abu Naim.

It will include surveillance system and observation towers to control southern border from drug smuggling and access of wanted criminals

These measures came forth due to recent visit of the Egyptian security delegation and common understandings between two sides.

The southern border of the Gaza Strip has seen a share of weapon smuggling, food and building materials over the past ten years through secret underground tunnels linking the two countries borders. (T/RS5/RS1)
