Gaza, MINA – Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has reportedly suffered broken ribs after being subjected to torture by Israeli prison authorities at Rakevet Prison, according to the Palestinian Prisoner Information Office.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the office said that Dr. Abu Safiya experienced severe violence resulting in multiple injuries, including fractured ribs. July 27 marked the hardest day since Abu Safiya’s detention, as he endured brutal torture inside the prison. Despite his deteriorating health condition, Israeli prison authorities continue to abuse him, the statement added.

In addition to injuries from repeated torture, Abu Safiya also suffers from heart disease and high blood pressure. He has reportedly been held in isolation for 21 days in conditions that have worsened both his physical and psychological health. The Palestinian Prisoner Information Office said Israeli authorities continue to neglect Abu Safiya’s medical needs and stressed that the occupation authorities bear full responsibility for his safety and life.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was arrested by Israeli forces on December 27, 2024, while on duty at Kamal Adwan Hospital during a military operation in northern Gaza. Since then, he has been held under “unlawful combatant” status, which allows Israeli authorities to detain him without charge or trial for extended periods.

Before his arrest, Abu Safiya was known as one of the most prominent doctors in the Gaza Strip, continuing to treat patients while documenting the destruction of the health system caused by Israeli attacks. He remained on duty despite repeated attacks on his hospital and the martyrdom of his son in an Israeli drone strike.

Abu Safiya’s case has drawn widespread attention from Palestinian human rights organizations, United Nations bodies, and international humanitarian organizations, which have repeatedly called for his release. In a court hearing in June 2026, Abu Safiya demanded his immediate release, calling his detention “unjust and arbitrary.” His lawyer, Nasser Abu Awda, said his client appeared in court with his hands shackled and emphasized that Abu Safiya was only fulfilling his duty of providing medical services to civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law.

In July, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry for the Occupied Palestinian Territory called for Abu Safiya’s immediate, unconditional, and safe release, and demanded independent medical access for him. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention also stated that Abu Safiya’s detention violates international law and contradicts human rights protections.

Human rights organizations have noted that Abu Safiya is one of dozens of Palestinian health workers detained by Israeli authorities during the genocide in Gaza. They warn that his injuries and deteriorating health reflect broader concerns about the treatment of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.[]
