Civilian Death Toll in India-Controlled Kashmir Reaches 80

New Delhi, 12 Dzulhijjah 1437/14 September 2016 MINA) – The civilian death toll in India-controlled Kashmir touched 80 on Tuesday, with one person being killed and several others injured as security forces opened fire to quell fresh violence Tuesday morning.

“The violence broke out in Bandipora, some 70 km from state capital Srinagar, when protestors defied curfew and took out demonstrations, and clashed with security forces when the latter tried to stop the demonstrators,” Xinhua reported, quoting a senior police official said.

“When the security forces opened fire to contain the violence, one person sustained bullet wound and died, while several other people received injuries and admitted to a local hospital where the condition of a few are said to be serious,” he added.

India-controlled Kashmir has been on the boil since the killing of a 22-year-old man by Indian security forces in July.

Apart from 80 deaths, over 10,000 people have been injured in violence in the aftermath of the young man’s death.

Both India and Pakistan claim stake to Kashmir and have fought at least three major wars over the disputed region in the past decades. (T/R07/R01)
