CEP: Some 141 Journalists Killed in 29 Countries in 2012

Geneva, 22 Shafar 1434/4 January 2013(Ahramonline/MINA) – Some 141 journalists were killed in 2012 in 29 countries, said a statement released Thursday by the association “CEP” (Press Emblem Campaign) which advocates for the protection of journalists.

Since January 2008, the number of journalists killed has risen to 571, an annual average of 114 deaths per week or two.

The largest number of journalists killed in the world was recorded according to the Geneva-based NGO, Syria, with at least 37 journalists, including 13 working for foreign media, while four others are missing or considered prisoners. An American journalist James Foley was removed from the 22 November in northern Syria.

In addition, 19 journalists were killed in Somalia, where the situation has deteriorated sharply. Twelve other Pakistan, Mexico eleven, eleven in Brazil and six journalists killed in Honduras.

This number “record” of journalists killed worldwide increased by 31% compared to 2011 when 106 journalists were killed, according to the association.

In another organization, CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists), based in New York, at least 67 journalists were killed in 2012. The International Press Institute (IPI), based in Vienna, has identified 119 journalists killed in 2012. (T/R-017/R-006)
