Brussels, 09 Rajab 1438/06 April 2017 (MINA) – An international conference on Syria concluded here Wednesday evening by pledging USD 6 billion to help and support the Syrian people.

“Delegations present here have made a collective pledge of USD 6 billion for this year alone. It is an impressive figure. These commitments are significant. We have to act to implement these pledges as soon as possible,” KUNA quoted EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides as telling a concluding press conference.

He noted that the EU has pledged USD 1.3 billion for the current year.

The EU official stressed that “let us be clear: humanitarian aid is not a solution. What is urgently needed is a political solution.”

“My biggest wish is that next year there will be no need to hold another major conference on the Syrian Crisis. Instead, I hope that our next meeting will be about how to help rebuild Syria,” he added.

He said that this conference was marked by the horrific chemical attack in Idlib.

“It is another shameful war crime. In full disregard of humanity. Those responsible for it must be held accountable,” he added. (T/RS5/RS1)
