PLO Will Seek UNGA Session for Prisoners – Dr. Erekat

PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat in his Ramallah office,
Ramallah, 07 Jumadil Akhir 1438/06 March 2017 (MINA) – Palestinian chief negotiator Dr. Saeb Erekat said on Sunday the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) would seek to hold a special session by the UN General Assembly to discuss plight of Palestinian prisoners.

“We have asked Switzerland the host state of the Geneva conventions to hold a multi-party emergency meeting on the issue but it has not done so,” KUNA quoted Dr. Erekat as saying at a news conference he held with Issa Qaraqe’, chairman of the prisoners’ association and Chairman of the Prisoner’s Club, Qaddoura Fares.

He affirmed that the Palestinian leadership would pursue political actions at various levels to rally support for the prisoners’ cause.

Dr. Erekat labelled as phenomenal the fact that some super powers have been dealing with Israel “as a State above the law.

For his part, Qaraqe’ reiterated his recent call on the Palestinians to “boycott” the Israeli judiciary “for the Israeli courts are merely tools of the occupation.”

He accused the Israeli tribunals of issuing arbitrary rules against the prisoners and imposing high fines on their families. (T/RS05/RS01)
