Cairo, 14 Rabiul Awwal 1438/14 December 2016 IMINA) – The Arab League said Tuesday an urgent meeting at permanent-delegate level would be held on Thursday to discuss the tragic situation in Aleppo, north Syria.

Qatar requested the meeting and this demand has been backed by many Arab League member states, including Kuwait, Assistant Secretary General Hussam Zaki said in a statement to the press.

Kuwait’s Permanent Delegate to the Arab League Ahmad Al-Bakr announced earlier today that his country supported the Qatari request.

Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul Gheit denounced the atrocities against civilians in Aleppo, calling on all parties to immediately stop these inhumane acts.

From Riyadh, KUNA reported that the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Tuesday strongly condemned the bombardment of the Syrian city of Aleppo, killing of innocent civilians and complete destruction of the historic city.

The GCC condemns the systematic attacks on innocent civilians in Aleppo and their displacement, which are blatant violations of human rights, Secretary General Abdullatif Al-Zayani said in a statement.

He called on the UN to urgently help the Syrian people and stop the war crimes committed against the people of Aleppo.

The international community’s silence against the tragedy taking place in Aleppo “is a shame and should not continue,” he said.

Britain and France also called for an emergency UN Security Council (UNSC) session to discuss reported atrocities in Aleppo. (T/R07/R01)
