ISRAEL TARGETS SYRIA ARMY POST FOLLOWING ATTACK
Tel Aviv, 10 Dzulqa’dah 1435 /5 September 2014 (MINA) –The Israeli army on Thursday fired a rocket at a Syrian army post shortly after a rocket fired from Syria landed inside Israel.
Earlier Thursday, air-raid sirens were sounded in the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, according toIsrael Army Radio, Anadolu Agency quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA), as reporting Friday.
“A rocket fired from Syria hit open land in Israel and we responded by targeting a Syrian post with a rocket,” an Israeli army source told Anadolu Agency.
Mortar shells struck the occupied territory last week, which the Israeli army said had been fired in error by Syria’s warring camps.
For almost four years, Syria has been ravaged by conflict between the ruling regime of President Bashar al-Assad and heavily armed opposition forces.
Tension also remains high in the region following a just-halted Israeli offensive against Palestinian resistance factions in the Gaza Strip.
Over the course of the 51-day onslaught that began on July 7, at least 2,145 Palestinians were killed – the vast majority of them civilians – and some 11,000 injured.
The Syrian Golan Heights were occupied by Israel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
In 1981, the self-proclaimed Jewish state formally annexed the territory, which is inhabited by a small Syrian Druze community of roughly 20,000.
Rocket strikes occupied Golan Heights: Israeli media
A rocket on Thursday fell to earth in the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, according to Israeli media reports.
No injuries were reported, however, Israel’s Channel 2 reported.
The channel added that the Israeli army had begun investigating the source of the rocket but added that the general belief was that it had been fired in error by warring parties in next-door Syria.
Air-raid sirens had been sounded earlier Thursday in the Israel-occupied Syrian territory.
Without elaborating, Israel Army Radio confirmed that air-raid sirens had gone off in the Golan Heights.
The Israeli army has not given any reasons why the sirens were sounded earlier Thursday.
