New York, MINA – The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution on Monday, strongly reaffirming the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and their right to an independent State of Palestine.

The draft resolution received 164 votes in favor. Only eight member states voted against: Israel, the United States, Micronesia, Argentina, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and Nauru. Nine countries abstained: Ecuador, Togo, Tonga, Panama, Fiji, Cameroon, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, and South Sudan.

Adopted under the agenda item on the right of peoples to self-determination, the resolution reaffirms established UN positions recognizing the Palestinians’ right to freely determine their political status and pursue their development.

The document recalls relevant UN resolutions and international legal instruments, including the UN Charter, underscoring that self-determination is a fundamental principle of international law. It urges all states and UN agencies to continue supporting the Palestinian people in realizing this right.
