Ramallah, MINA — In a harrowing public testimony, Palestinian journalist Sami Al‑Sa’i has revealed details of being sexually assaulted and tortured by guards while detained in an Israeli prison. Al‑Sa’i shared his account at an event held by the MADA Center for Media Freedoms in Ramallah on Monday.

Al‑Sa’i, from Tulkarem in the northern West Bank, was held under administrative detention without charge from February 2024 until June 2025. He stated the assault occurred in Megiddo Prison, located in northern occupied territory.

According to his testimony, he was severely beaten by a group of guards while handcuffed and blindfolded. The guards then dragged him to a corner, stripped him, and forced him into a kneeling position. He was then raped with a hard object, which he described as a baton, causing “unbearable pain.”

During the assault, guards inflicted violent blows to sensitive body parts, with one guard standing on his head and neck.

Al‑Sa’i described the overall conditions for Palestinian detainees as “catastrophic,” citing systematic practices of beatings, starvation, threats, and medical neglect.

His testimony aligns with reports from Palestinian prisoners’ rights organizations, which document a significant escalation in torture methods since the start of the war on Gaza. These groups assert that torture has become entrenched in the daily life of detainees, extending beyond interrogation for confessions.

The report states that over 9,300 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children, are currently in Israeli prisons. Human rights organizations allege these detainees face torture, starvation, and medical neglect, which have contributed to multiple deaths in custody.[]
